WOODBURY — A 29-year-old Atlantic City man pleaded guilty Tuesday to having a handgun without a permit on March 28 in Deptford.
According to information provided by the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, Senior Assistant Gloucester County Prosecutor Paul Colangelo will recommend that Brooks S. Griffin be sentenced to five years in state prison and be required to serve three years before becoming eligible for parole.
The gun was loaded, Griffin said, acknowledging he had no permit for it.
Sentencing was set for May 15, so as to allow Griffin, a senior at Stockton College, to complete his studies. He is a double major in business and forensic accounting, he said.
Griffin was accused of returning to a Deptford workplace after he had been fired and demanding his final paycheck. He took a cell phone from a supervisor and initially was charged with robbery, but the phone was returned at the scene of the crime and the victim agreed to drop that charge, Griffin’s lawyer said. The handgun was not involved in the robbery, Colangelo said. Griffin was arrested entering a car at the mall and has been free on $75,000 bail.
