WOODBURY — Inspira Medical Center Woodbury supported the mission of the Kitchen of Hope food pantry in Glassboro by donating ingredients for several families to enjoy a holiday dinner.   

Vivian Hanson, coordinator of the food pantry, and her husband John Hanson, archdeacon of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, accepted the Inspira Woodbury donation from:  John W. Graham, COO; Beth McFarland, RN, Quality Management; Marie Johnson, RN, Staff Education; Frank Baccare, Food & Nutrition; and Jim Baca, EMS.  

On Saturday, Dec. 20, 263 families were served by the Kitchen of Hope, which is operated by St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Glassboro.

DEPTFORD TWP. — The Division of Continuing Education at Rowan College at Gloucester County (RCGC) is offering two free English as a Second Language (ESL) courses with a focus on digital literacy beginning in February.

Day classes will meet on Saturdays starting Feb. 7 through Apr. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Glassboro Public Library. Evening classes will held on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning Feb. 23 through Apr. 28 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Woodbury Public Library.

The program is for students interested in learning to incorporate essential computer skills into their job-seeking efforts, becoming more productive at work or school or simply staying safe online. The ESL program is free, however, limited seating is available and pre-registration is required. Applicants can register now at the RCGC Continuing Education Center. RCGC’s Continuing Education Center is located at 1492 Tanyard Road in Deptford, just off Exit 56 of Route 55.

HARRISON TWP. — A single live .22-caliber bullet was found outside Clearview Regional High School Tuesday morning and the school was immediately placed on lockdown.

A maintenance worker found the round just outside the media wing entrance of the school, police said.

A statement was posted on the school’s website announcing the lockdown “for precautionary measures.” Alerts also went out through the school’s telephone notification system, said police.

There was never any risk for students or staff, police said.

Officers and K-9 teams from around the region are searching the school, just in case, said police. Assistance was received from the New Jersey State Police, Salem County Sheriff's Department, Camden County Sheriff's Department, the Gloucester County Sheriff's Department, Rowan University, Glassboro, Pitman, Mantua, West Deptford, Logan and Woolwich police.

The school was scheduled for a 12:15 p.m. dismissal.

No threats were made, police said. They expected the lockdown to be lifted by 1 p.m..

No arrests have been made and the incident is under investigation, police said.

 

WOODBURY — A 26-year-old Berlin man faces consecutive sentences totaling eight years in state prison after pleading guilty to possessing more than an ounce of marijuana with the intent to distribute and possession of a handgun during the commission of a narcotics crime on June 21, 2013 in Glassboro.

Byron A. Sills pleaded to the charges on Monday, Dec, 22. Sentencing is scheduled for March 25.

As part of a plea agreement, it will be recommended that Sills serve three years for the marijuana crime and, consecutive to that, five years for the weapons offense, with the requirement that he serve three years before he’s eligible for parole.

The pot and a Ruger .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun were found during vehicle stop in Glassboro.

As last week ended, the big news was that Sony. after being hacked and after the hackers made threats to kill people who went to see “The Interview,” a comedy film about someone trying to assassinate K*m J*ng *n the dictator of N*rth K*rea, well, they pulled the movie.

(You’ll note I have altered certain names throughout this column, so as not to tick anyone off.)

I mean, all references to the movie were eradicated — billboards painted over, signs destroyed, the debut of the movie canceled.

If this was really a case of cyber warfare, well, the American people, thanks to Sony, lost big time.

Supposedly, N*rth K*rea did the hack attack. Suddenly N*rth K*rea is supposed to have an ultra-sophisticated cyber warfare unit called Bureau 121 — 1,800 extremely talented computer hackers dead set on attacking S*uth K*rea and, now it seems, us.

LOGAN TWP.  — A resident of the Logan Woods development told police his home was burglarized between Dec. 20 and 22, with entry made through an unsecured rear door. Stolen from the house were a Smith & Wesson .38, a Smith & Wesson .357 and a Smith & Wesson 9mm, a Remington 12-gauge shotgun, an Ithaca 12-gauge shotgun, several gun cases and prescription medication.

WASHINGTON TWP. – The Gloucester County Division of Social Services was able to obtain sponsors for more than 600 children in need of holiday joy this year. The division sets an annual goal to make sure each child under the age of 14 who is a social services beneficiary receives a special holiday.

Johnson and Mathey in West Deptford supported 146 children with 41 bikes and assisted older children with gift cards.

CB Kids, a nonprofit partner with software employer CDW in Washington Township supported 135 kids and also donated 30 bikes.

Holy Spirit Church in Mullica Hill sponsored 80 kids.

Eleven county department representatives sponsored families, as did five employees in Social Services.

Gloucester County Sheriff Carmel Morina, Santa Claus and Freeholder Dan Christy visited Gloucester County’s Shady Lane Day Care Center and Shady Lane Nursing Home Tuesday to share some holiday cheer.

GLASSBORO — Ms. Mary Aruffo’s 5th grade class at Thomas E. Bowe School collected hundreds of items from their school that were on the ‘Wish List’ for the Gloucester County Animal Shelter.  

The donated items were presented on Friday, Dec. 19 to Freeholder Dan Christy, Liaison to the Gloucester County Animal Shelter (GCAS), Bill Lombardi, GCAS Director and Freeholder Heather Simmons.

Freeholders Christy and Simmons presented certificates of appreciation to the students for their work on behalf of the animals.
