WEST DEPTFORD TWP. — William Schickel is believed to have killed himself Monday with a handgun stolen in a Sept. 17 burglary.
Schickel, 24, of the White Swan trailer park on Mantua Grove Road, was being sought by the U.S. Marshal’s Service Fugitive Task Force when he took his own life, police said.
Marshals, acting on a tip that Schickel was staying at a townhouse on Buckingham Drive, knocked on the door at about 1:20 p.m. Monday, said police.
Residents of the townhouse acknowledged Schickel was downstairs and were moved to safety, police said.
With Marshals covering the front and back of the townhouse, a Marshal announced his presence, then heard what was believed to be a gunshot, said police.
The task force members backed out, maintained the perimeter and called police, who in turn called the Gloucester County Special Weapons and Tactics team to the scene, police said.
Police spent the afternoon trying to make contact with Schickel, who was wanted for violation of probation, which detectives believe was for two burglary charges. Police used loudspeakers and sent two different robots into the residence, attempting to get a visual on Schickel, said police.
At about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, the SWAT team made entry into the townhouse and found Schickel dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot, police said.
The weapon used, a Sig Sauer P220 .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun, was stolen in the burglary of a residence in the White Swan trailer park, said police. There were pry marks on the front door and bedroom door and $80 in change and some scrap gold were also missing, police said.
Schickel was the primary suspect in that burglary; police said witnesses and even the victim had seen Schickel hanging around the trailer.
“We were trying to locate him to scoop him up for questioning for that,” said Deputy Police Chief Sean McKenna. “He used that same gun to kill himself.”
