WASHINGTON TWP. — A Camden man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a Feb. 3 robbery and assault at the Washington Way Apartments.
Members of the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office Fugitive Investigations Unit and the U. S. Marshal’s Service Fugitive Task Force took Devonta A. Bethea, 20, of 9th Street, Camden, into custody at his mother’s home without incident when he answered the door, authorities said.
Bethea was charged with robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon for the earlier incident. He allegedly took several hundred dollars from three juveniles who used Craigslist to solicit the purchase of iPhones, said authorities.
Bethea allegedly pointed a handgun at one of the juveniles who tried to stop Bethea from fleeing, authorities said.
Officers received consent to search the basement of Bethea’s mother’s home, where he had been sleeping, and found and seized two sawed-off shotguns, said authorities.
Bethea was additionally charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm. He is being held in default of $150,000 bail, authorities said.
A second suspect, Jerome Powell, 20, also of Camden, was arrested Feb. 5 by Camden County Metro olice officers and is being held in default of $527,500 bail.
Washington Township police assisted in the investigation.
