WOODBURY — Donald D. Segar, 22, of Newtonville, was sentenced Friday, Dec. 19 to serve eight years in prison on assault and weapons charges for a Feb. 17, 2013 confrontation with his girlfriend in Woodbury.

Witnesses had testified that Segar choked the woman and fired shots into the apartment ceiling while the woman’s 1-year-old daughter was in the room.

Segar was convicted in a jury trial on Oct 2, 2013 of aggravated assault with a firearm, threat to kill, endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and certain persons not to have weapons because of a prior narcotics conviction in Atlantic County, authorities said.

The Gloucester County Board of Chosen Freeholders have announced the
schedule for the 13th Annual James G. Atkinson Memorial Holiday Basketball
Classic Tournament that will be held at Rowan College at Gloucester County on
Friday, Dec. 26 and Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014.

Freeholder Director Robert Damminger said,  “This event has raised more than $42,000
in scholarships since its inception and has provided much needed financial
assistance to students over the years.”

PITMAN — The Pitman police department will be suspending overnight parking enforcement for the holidays beginning Friday, Dec. 19 through Sunday, Jan. 4.

 

Police will resume parking enforcement on Monday night, Jan. 5.

 

During this time period, residents are asked to remove all vehicles from the roads if there’s a storm with plowable snow. In the event of a snowstorm, the police chief may ban all parking to allow for plowing and clearing of the streets.

WOODBURY — A judge today denied a motion to dismiss an indictment against a Mickleton woman charging her with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child in a 2010 incident that left her 7-month old child with a fractured femur.

An attorney for Laura McKenna, 40, argued that the legal principle of “collateral estoppel”  — barring re-litigation of a case — applies to the criminal charges, since the state’s Child Protection and Permanency agency had already investigated the injury and a Family Court ruling had resulted.

FRANKLIN TWP. — Two men have been arrested in connection with the Nov. 23 theft of a trailer and an all-terrain vehicle.

The victim had listed the Honda TRX 450R racing-style ATV for sale on Craigslist, police said. He received a text message on Nov. 22 asking if the ATV was still for sale and his response included his home address, said police.

Overnight, the trailer with the ATV and some tools inside was stolen.

WOODBURY — Gloucester County Sheriff Carmel Morina announced today that on Tuesday, Dec. 9 members of the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Fugitive Unit, Arrested No. 2 off of the Sheriff’s Ten Most Wanted List.  

Teresa Alicea was arrested by the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Department Fugitive Unit Officers at her residence in West Deptford without incident.    

Alicea was wanted for violation of probation for a failure to appear on Jan. 6, 2014.  Her original charge was
Possession of CDS.  She was lodged in the Salem County Jail.

This brings the total to 95 fugitives that have been apprehended from the Sheriff’s Department 10 Most Wanted List since its inception in January 2010.

— Bruce R. Berry Jr., 52, of Barrington, foe eluding, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and possession of CDS in Glassboro on Aug. 29.

— Jonathon J. Graham, 24, of Sewell, for theft on Aug. 26 in Washington Township.

I have played Santa Claus three times in my life.

In grade school, I was Santa in a Christmas play at St. Barnabas School in Southwest Philadelphia. There was no Santa suit, though. We made do: I borrowed a red car coat from some other kid, put a pillow in it. My mother created a beard and hair from cotton batting, attached a piece of red cloth to make a hat. The whole thing was held together, precariously, with bobby pins. (Remember bobby pins? Do women still use bobby pins?)

There were a couple of performances of the play and by the end, the makeshift beard and hair were beginning to look, well, like clumps of cotton batting.

The second time I played Santa was for the children of a friend. This memory is hazy. I think there was a suit. There was a beard, too, although there was also a face mask of Santa. I figured the mask was pretty frightening looking, so I went with the beard. I guess I was in my twenties, but these were little kids, so what did they know?
