PITMAN — When you start hearing sirens and seeing police cars zooming through Pitman Sunday morning, don’t be alarmed — it’s just a drill.

The emergency management drill and training exercise will involve police, the fire service, emergency medical services, pubic works, Gloucester County HazMat and a bomb disposal unit.

It’s just training, mandated by the state, and not an actual emergency. It starts at about 8:30 a.m. and lasts until noon.

FRANKLIN TWP. — Three men made off with a safe from an Elmer Street residence Thursday afternoon.

At about 1:45 p.m., a light-skinned black male, 5’9” tall, thin, between 20 and 30 and wearing a blue uniform shirt, knocked on the front door and said he was from a tree cutting service, said police. He had a small area of raised skin or a distinct patch of freckles under his left eye.

He directed the victim to the rear yard to point out trees that would have to be removed on elementary school property that backed up to hers, said police. The man was communicating with someone on a two-way radio.

While they were in the back yard, two other men entered the house and took the safe  containing personal information from a bedroom, police said. Once they were clear, the man in the blue shirt told the woman he would have to leave to consult a co-worker, said police.

He did not return.

The men were in a white ChevroletTraverse SUV, and were seen on security video leaving Elmer Street and traveling north on Delsea Drive after the theft, police said.
