Jim Six Column: Not calling in sick

I haven’t been feeling well lately. This is my first experience with being sick since I stopped working for a living.
It’s unusual, to feel awful and not have to call anyone to tell them you won’t be in today. (You must remember those 6 a.m. phone calls to your boss. You’d make sure to sound like you were on Death’s door, so the boss would get the message that you were much too sick to come into the office today, to tend to mundane obligations while trying not to infect your co-workers. “Hello, boss? It’s Jim. Listen, I feel really bad. So I’m not gonna make it in today. I’ll see you tomorrow — if I can.”)
So now, here I am, feeling lousy and having to notify a total of no people. It feels strange, that’s for sure.
And the funny thing is, it’s nothing contagious, so I’m not even saving co-workers from infection, as I have no co-workers anymore.
